Could pain in my left ovary and light spotting me a Infection?

my last period was 23rd Jan and therefore due on this weekend coming. Last fri, sat and sun i had light spotting, which stopped then after i had a lil mre spotting then pain strted on my left ovary. I went to hospital to see gynocologist who did internal examination and said she thinks it may be an infection so has given me antibiotics and said she will book me in for scan for sometime in the next 14days. Could it be something else as im really not convinced its an infection has anyone been in the same situation?
